Day 9

12 november, 2007

More time on the bus…towards Port Elisabeth and Kariega Game Reserve. Finally we will see some African Game ! The park is Amazing !!! The loges are more the comfortable, luxurious almost and the scenery from the deck is truly breathtaking. I could quite easily stay here for 3-4 days….but will have to do the most I can of our one night stay. At 16.00 we mounted the “Safari Jeeps” for an afternoon “Safari”. (Apparently safari means “to travel”.) Almost before we had left the Boma we saw Giraffes, a mother and a calf. Crossing the road into the “predator section” one of the first encounters was with a group of lions, basking in the afternoon sun. It was truly unreal to see those powerful animals only 15 meters away. A few minutes after that we ran into the Elephant family. They walked peacefully around the car and it was great to see the young calf playing up just a few paces away from the car.The park stretched out over almost 10.000 hectares of countryside that was both rainforest and savannah. Our Ranger, Ioan, took us up on the savannah on a plateau and we joined up with the groups other Jeep. Climbing out of the cars, we spent a few minutes enjoying the spectacular sunset….and a glass of wine, with almost an endless view. On the plain before us wandered Gemsbok, Impala, Nyala, Blue Wildebeast, Zebras and many more of Africa’s graziers. The sounds of Africa was all the entertainment needed at that point. It was breathtaking !Before darkness set in we climbed back into the cars and continued the tour. Spotting a Bushpig, a Black Backed Jackal, a family of White Rhino’s and a numerous of other grazing animals before we were dropped of back at the Boma around 20.00. In true SA style we were then treated to a proper Brai in the Boma and entertained by the staff with traditional songs and dancing during the evening.Returning to our lodge after dinner, Dad and I sat on our deck for a while enjoying a fantastic thunder storm in the distance that lit up the horizon with a seemingly endless firework. It was a good night !
